SkittlesSkittles is from my Junk Food litter out of Ch. NorthWapiti's Crunchie x Ali. I waited a long 3 years for this litter to happen. Crunchie is just an amazing Siberian in my opinion. A 4 time Iditarod finisher, the last time at 10 1/2 years of age and with over 30,000 miles in harness, never injured or dropped from a race. I have admired this boy for a number of years. I first sent Ali out to breed to Crunchie naturally but the breeding didn't take. Since Ali wasn't proven I decided to breed her to one of my boys, Tanka. That breeding took so I then bred Ali to Crunchie's frozen semen which to my delighted turned out to be successful giving me that extremely hard decision of 4 girls to choose from. I LOVED all the girls in this litter and could have been happen with any of them so in the end the placements were made mostly on personality and which home I thought each girl would fit into best.

Fitting In |
In Skittle case I was looking for an easy going girl that would get along with River's strong personality and so far that has worked out extremely well. In fact, she gets along with all the other dogs wonderfully and they all seem to love her just as much as I do. She does love to curl up to them all and then rest her head on them.
She can however, especially when teamed up with her "Little Red Devil Dog" half-sister River, be mischievous. Close supervision is definitely required whenever these two are together which they normally are. The difference is that Skittles gives you this "I'm SO sorry mommy" look that it is extremely difficult to not just want to hug her even when she has done something bad. |
In Harness |
This girl is fast, agile and has lots of drive and endurance in harness. Even though she is not a big girl she will pull me on my bike by herself. Many dogs will not do this. They want a dog beside them. Skittles is also a GREAT eater. This is very important in a sled dog. They can not go for miles and miles if they are a fussy eater and don't get the calories they need to do the work. I'm also seeing nice lead potential in this girl.

Obedience |
I also thought that Skittles showed the most obedience potential, an activity that I have "returned to" because it is something I can do by myself without the help of friends. She is such a sweet girl who loves to please and her tail rarely stops wagging when we are working on obedience exercises. Once she is finished being a mother I'm hoping to hit the obedience ring by storm with this little girl.

In The Show Ring |
I find it very sad that in my breed what will likely make a Siberian very good sled dog will also likely hinder their prospects in the show ring. Skittles has good length of leg, with a solid topline, good length of upper arm and a very nice croup. All these things are so important to a sled dog who is suppose to have not just endurance but speed but they are often not only overlooked but penalized in the show ring. For some reason many judges think a dog pulling a sled has to be "husky" which is why you see what some Siberian people call "Mini-Mals" winning in the ring all too often. This, along with Skittles uncommon colouring, has made showing Skittles a challenge but I was able to get her finished and even with a couple of Best of Breed wins over a special.
